It is with great sadness that the following belated news is sent to you on behalf of Joe Galindo who passed away on April 17th, 2011. To the best of my knowledge Joe was with the 503rd and lost both legs while retrieving claymore mines. According to him an enemy soldier ran out of the jungle and threw grenades at his lower body blowing his legs off. Joe was a proud member of The Herd and marched in the welcome home parade of 1982 at the front of the Texas delegation. His wheelchair was pushed by Sgt Roy P. Benavidez 5th Special Forces Medal Of Honor Recipient. As a Vietnam Veteran myself (1968, 2nd Bn. 27th Infantry, 25th Division) I witnessed The Herd standing tall and marching in that parade to The Wall. From a comrade brother-in-arms, Francisco J. Gutierrez in Lubbock, Texas. Welcome Home!

Around July 1967 I had just returned from a tour in the Air Force from Clark Field and my nephew Glenn D. Kerns came by my home to visit. I had not seen him in about three years since I spent all my service time overseas. Having seen the casualty list from the 173 rd in the Stars and Stripes while at Clark Field, I asked Glenn why he had joined the Army and the 173 rd Airborne during this time. He said, “ I wanted to be the best of the best”. As he left my home he told me that the next time that I saw him he would probably be in a casket. I asked him to take care of himself. He was in B CO 2nd Battalion 503d Infantry ABN 173 rd and was killed on November 11, 1967 at the Battle of Dak To. He was 19 years old as were many who gave the ultimate sacrifice during this time. I have heard the name Andy Eiland who was a medic and was with Glenn when he died. As his uncle I would like to make contact with anyone who served with him. I am writing a family history and would like some information on his time in Vietnam.

I first wish all of you a wonderful 2009 year. These years have flown by so quickly. My home in country was with B-4-4 503rd 69-70 North LZ English. I was assigned to stag team 11 guarding the church while they were getting ready for services. We were hit by zappers one early morning at 3:15 which ended with all 33 RVNS killed and the church was destroyed. Two months later we were moved to stag 13. Was wondering if there were any other Stag Team menbers still out there? One of our team members has passed on (William Manchester).
Our Team (Ski, Rennie, Bill, Janson, and Manchester)

I regret not finding you guys and staying in touch. You guys have been in my thoughts and will remain for ever. May God bless all of you.

He mentioned to me about the LZ Uplift and SOB Special Forces, but I don't know what it means. I am looking for any info that someone may have concerning his service in Vietnam. He won't talk about it and I've been searching for nearly 30 years. He's alive and living in Washington state. The war still haunts him greatly. Is there anything I can do to help him? I would welcome any info. Thank you. P.S. I would appreciate info on reunions as well as I would love to attend on his behalf and meet the people who served with him. SPC Miller

In 70/71 I served with the 503rd assigned out of LZ English, made several combat assualts out of LZ Uplift.

This is one of the first times I have been able to bring myself to contact my buddies from the "Herd." You remember when things got bad, the monsoons, climbing the mountains, endless nights of "Hawks", little sleep, low morale, dear johns, and when we thought it couldn't get worse we would lose a good friends
. To try to cope we would look at each other and say..."It don't mean nothin!" But you know in our hearts it meant everything.

In March of 71 I lost two friends, David Hugh Smith and Patrick Loyal Fricke. Some other friends, "Gary Hoffman,Owens, and Georges" made my time in the jungle bearable and helped me get through some hard times.

Smith, Fricke I miss you! Hoffman and Owens thanks for your friendship, we haven't spoken since we have been back from Nam, but I think of all of you often. If you get a chance send me an E-Mail.

I'm happy that I found this site and this guest book. I'm a 173rd Vietnam vet. I was with Company B, 1/503 from April of'64 to April of '65. I was looking for a place where I could say "Hello" to all my fallen friends and fellow "Sky Soldiers". On this day, 11/08/65, in particular, 40 years to the date, I saw and heard of too many of my friends and commards fall in combat. Every year on this date I take the time to remember. I'd like to think that they, the fallen, are the reason I'm able to be here today and to remember them for what they did, what they gave and how they lived. Thank you to all that have served and to all that are serving. Words cannot express my heart felt thanks.

Iserved with Charlie co November plt. 3/503rd We were a roving battalion, and had no home to speak of. We barely knew what a stand down was.At one time we were in the feild for 93 days straight without bathes other than rice paddies, and rivers. We lost a lot of good men to booby traps and ambuhes, but the thing that never leaves my heart is the fact the HERD always took care of its own. We were not only soldiers, WE WERE BROTHERS!!!, and always will be. November plt had our first reunion July 1st-5th 2005. I suggest all out there do the same if at all possible. And it is.
